Chapter 48

Miri and the chimeragon both faced off against each other, readying their attacks before releasing them at the exact same time—the chimeragon firing its tri-elemental blast, Miri firing her Void Vortex. Miri’s spell shot out from her staff in the form of a black hole about a meter wide with wisps of purple aura dancing at its surface.

The vortex travelled slowly—about the speed of a normal person walking—as it collided with the stream of radiant elemental energy blasting out of the chimeragon’s multiple mouths. As the dark sphere collided with the blast, it warped the brilliant flares of energy around itself before sucking them back towards its center, absorbing it and empowering its own potential power even further.

Then, after absorbing the full power of the blast, the vortex crashed right into the chimeragon’s face (faces?), causing a brief implosion that lasted only for a split second. Right as the implosion happened, space itself seemed to be warped as the visual image around the vortex was being tugged towards its center.

Miri already knew what’s about to come next. And she’s not sticking around to find out.

“Shit! Run, run, run!” Miri shouted, quickly grabbing Anne and rushing towards the door.

Right as they exited the area, a huge explosion happened behind them, leaving a loud boom that echoed across the entire keep and shook the ground beneath their feet. Despite that, the two women did not look back. They simply kept running and running until they could run no more. After about a minute or so of running at their full speed, they collapsed onto the floor out of pure exhaustion—panting and heaving as they took a moment to catch their breaths.

“That…was…terrifying…” Anne said in between her panting breaths.

“That…was…exhilirating!” Miri added in between her heavy heaving, possessing a sense of thrilling excitement that was missing from the cleric.

“Miri…how could you say that…we almost died…” Anne asked, astounded by the redhead’s enthusiastic outlook towards all of this.

“Yeah, but we didn’t!” Miri corrected, chuckling as she continued breathing heavily. “And did you see what I just did back there?! Oh, that chimeragon totally ate that Void Vortex like a chump! It was so fricking awesome!”

Anne shook her head in disbelief. “I just cannot understand you sometimes.” She looked down to see the wound of the mage’s arm, one that she’d gotten from getting slashed by the chimeragon. “Here, let me take a look at your arm.”

Miri gazed at the injury on her arm with a look of mild surprise. “Oh, yeah. I got injured. I’d barely even notice. Must have been all that adrenaline.”

Anne casted Vital Healing, surrounding Miri’s wounded arm with a swirl of bright-yellow energy as the bleeding scrape closed itself up little by little. Because of the effects of the magic, Miri could also feel the pain from the wound being slightly dulled. Way better than any doctor Miri had ever visited, that’s for sure.

“You think that beast is dead?” Anne asked softly as she continued the healing process.

“I doubt it,” Miri replied. “Given how strong it looks, that vortex I performed probably only stunned it for a little while. At most, it might have slightly injured or weakened it, if we’re lucky.”

“You still want to keep going?” Anne asked.

“Hey, at this point, it’s too late to turn back now,” Miri replied. “After all the trouble we've been through, I’d hate to leave empty-handed. How about you?”

  “If you’re staying, I’m staying.”

Miri gave an appreciative smile. “I couldn’t ask for more.”

Within a brief moment, the wound was closed up, leaving Miri’s arm looking good as new—save for some remnant trails of dried-up blood. Afterwards, the two of them continued onto their quest.
