Chapter 24: Evil Descends.
~~~ [START]
“So?” Honey sipped some juice, eyes trailing on Gina, who approached and sat on a seat beside them. “You guys getting back together—”
“No,” Gina cut in, grabbing Troy’s plate as her eyes turned to him like daggers before he could dare to protest. “And on the way, grab me some juice, will ya?”
Troy clicked his tongue at the sight of her giggles. Then he stood up and made his way to the food section.
But he halted. And he stared, eyes glued for a second too long.
“I know you,” Troy whispered, with an ounce of recognition, while grabbing another plate from the side.
And Bella, who was standing in front, nodded, hands moving forward as the cafe cook dished some pasta.
Then Bella looked back, eyes turned to him. “Are you related to them?”
“What?” Troy’s brows raised.
“I mean… never mind,” Bella said, turning back. “It’s just, I thought you guys were related.”
Troy’s eyes glanced at Edward, who was now rising from his seat and making his way toward them.
“You know.” Bella turned to Troy again, this time unashamed of how she was slowing the line. “Your eyes… they’re golden, just like theirs.”
Troy laughed, overtaking her obstructing figure. “It’s called Ember.”
Troy then nodded at the lunch lady, lying by saying what she dished was enough; Edward was getting closer.
“Nice meeting you, Bella,” Troy said, seconds away from leaving, but Bella stepped forward.
“You know my name?” Bella asked, heard inches from turning.
“Huh? Yeah, your dad doesn’t stop talking about you.” Then Troy retreated with swiftness, his eyes not even daring to turn to Edward, who passed by him so close that their shoulders touched.
Edward neared Bella, close enough for the scent of her hair to prove too overwhelming. So he stepped back, hand moving to his nose to block out the air.
And Bella jolted when she noticed him, so much so that she dropped an apple that was on her platter.
Edward moved a foot before the apple could hit the ground, smiling at Bella’s shocked expression as he boosted it up, grabbed it, and handed it over.
“Thanks,” Bella said, taking it and placing it back. “You know, your mood swings are kinda giving me whiplash.”
She overtook his figure, head shaking, because just yesterday he was screaming at her for tipping and not watching her steps.
Bella handed her plate to another cafe cook. “And no, I’m not staying away from you.”
“You would if you’re smart,” Edward whispered.
Bella turned to him. “Well, I’m not.”
The silence rumbled, its patient noise carrying sounds they were both too oblivious to perceive.
“So, are you ready to tell me the truth?” she asked.
Edward’s eyes turned away from her, glancing at everything besides her own. “No, probably not.”
And Bella’s sigh cut the silent noise like a knife.
“I’d rather hear your theories,” Edward said, nearing closer.
“Psh, I don’t know. Radioactive spiders?”
And Edward laughed beside her, so much that Rosalie frowned at the noise from the far back.
“I’m serious,” Bella continued, “what about kryptonite?”
“That’s all superhero stuff.”
Bella shook her head, grabbing the dish the cook was handing and nearly walking away. But Edward grabbed her arm before she could do so.
“Um…” Edward’s words stumbled under his tongue.
“Let’s hang out.” Bella shot, stepping inches closer. “Let’s go to the beach. Everybody’s going to La Push, so come… You know, have fun.”
Edward shook his head. So Bella shrugged her shoulders and turned to walk away, but Edward’s hand pulled her again.
Edward turned his head to Troy, who was sitting at his table, arguing with Gina about a box of juice he forgot to grab. And Bella, after noting Edward’s glare, turned to Troy, too.
“Just… stay away from him,” Edward said, and a certain type of interest boiled within Bella’s conscience.
“Why?” Bella asked, stepping closer. “He’s just like you, isn’t he?”
And Edward’s eyes straightened wide when she said it.
“What? No… just…” Edward’s words were stumbling, and when he turned back, everyone from Rosalie to Alice was staring daggers at him. “No, just stay away.”
He hurried, walking away with his fists clenching at Troy, who he overheard saying he thought Bella was hot; an attempt at making Honey jealous.
Then, as if possessed, Edward changed direction and walked with haste toward Troy’s table.
And on the other end, Gina’s eyes widened when she noted it.
“Honey, how’s my makeup?” she asked in a whisper, licking her lips to soften the gloss. “Mr. Gorgeous is coming this way.”
“We need to talk,” Edward said, eyes directed at Troy, with his hands placed as clenched fists on their table.
“Edward.” Gina interrupted, looking nervously between Troy and him. “You guys know each other—?”
“No, but… okay, sure, man.” Troy didn’t even resist. He just sighed and stood up. Then he leaned over to Honey. “Protect my food from Gina.”
And Honey giggled beside him.
Edward’s eyes twitched toward Honey because of reading her sudden thoughts; she knew what he was.
“You good, dude?” Gina asked again, noting the change in Edward’s expression.
“Yeah, he’s good.” Troy started walking away.
And after a moment of hesitation, with his eyes still glaring at Honey, Edward also turned back and followed behind.
“I think he likes you.” Gina was the first to break the lingering silence.
“Yuck.” Honey exaggerated the reaction, causing Gina, who was beside her, to blast out in laughter, stating how delusional she truly was.
But, heavens knew she was right. Because all else was and would forever be blinded by the smoothness of skin.
For even the Devil was an angel once.
