Chapter 244: The Battle Approaching Its End (Part 1)
Just as the War Mantis let out a miserable shriek, broke in two, and started to fall, Luya felt at least five or six forces pulling at her on the mantis's back.
In fact, she had been feeling such forces all along until just now. Those were wind manipulation spells masterfully controlled by the air mages, attempting to pull her directly from the mantis's back. However, because the mantis was constantly flying and weaving through the air, and she was hiding in the crevice behind its body, they had been ineffective. But now the mantis was broken and falling, and her trajectory was clear, so an air mage immediately resumed using the wind manipulation spell to grab her.
No matter what, she absolutely could not let these Necromancers get the Leaves of the World Tree, no matter what. To guard the light and life that oppose darkness was the mission of the elven race. These concepts had long been branded by her into the deepest recesses of her mind countless times, so she immediately leaped with all her might off the mantis's back. This angle happened to use the mantis's body to block the line of sight and casting of the air mages. The few forces pulling at her immediately disappeared.
This was just a subconscious action to protect the Leaves of the World Tree in her hands, but after she did it, after jumping off the mantis's back, she immediately realized that what she had done seemed like she was looking to die.
This was an altitude of at least two or three hundred meters. The giant ancient trees below looked no different from blades of grass. She could not use the most basic air magic, Feather Fall, and with her skills, falling directly down meant certain death.
Regretting it now was obviously too late. Even if she were to beg the air mages to use their wind manipulation spell to pull her now, they wouldn't be able to reach her. She could only fall freely along with the mantis's huge body.
In her ears, apart from the ever-growing sound of the wind, she could hear nothing else. The things on the ground that had originally been very small were rapidly growing larger. At such a speed and with such a drop, Luya could almost imagine the feeling of her body hitting the ground. It would surely be like smashing an egg with all one's might, not even having time to feel the pain.
Am I going to die? Luya only felt her head suddenly become completely empty.
She had originally thought that for the sacred mission of the elven race, she could face everything with composure. But when she truly felt that the hand of death had already gripped her and was about to crush her into a pulp of flesh like squashing a bug, the most basic, most primal fear of a living being surged up from the depths of her heart like a tsunami, washing everything else away completely.
A scream, one that even she had never heard before, burst from her throat. Her limbs seemed to no longer obey her commands; even though she knew it was impossible for there to be anything to grab, she kept flailing about in the air. Instinct drove her to use every possible movement and sound to escape the seemingly unavoidable impact that would smash her to pieces.
With a soft thump, Luya finally felt sensation in her back. Although it was a very heavy impact, it didn't seem to be the kind that would smash her to pieces as she had expected. It hurt a little, but it felt very solid and safe. Her body was still descending, but the speed had greatly decreased. It seemed as if a great resistance was surrounding her, dissipating the force of her fall from a great height.
I'm not dead? Luya regained some of her senses. Only then did she realize she had fallen into someone's arms, or rather, this person had jumped into the air to catch her. The force dissipating the impact around her was precisely the Feather Fall used by this person.
"Why did you still jump down when you clearly don't have the ability to? You don't seem like the type to be so short-sighted." this person said, looking at her.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"It's you?" Although this person was wearing a mask, Luya immediately recognized the voice and the eyes.
In mid-air, Master Aiden saw Luya being caught by someone. He was slightly stunned, then immediately dove down like a goshawk. The Leaves of the World Tree were there, so he didn't dare to use direct attack spells, but as long as they were still in the air, it was his domain.
A curtain of blue water suddenly flashed before Master Aiden as he dove, then transformed into countless water droplets that scattered. His diving figure suddenly rolled sideways. He tumbled two or three times in mid-air, sliding a great distance before finally stopping his momentum.
Although this sharp turn while flying at high speed was proof of his profound mastery of air magic, something absolutely no one else on the entire continent could achieve, the movement and posture did look somewhat pathetic.
Even more pathetic was Master Aiden's current appearance. A small, thin piece of flesh was missing from the tip of his nose, slowly oozing fresh blood. His expression, however, was completely filled with shock and anger, his eyes so red they seemed about to bleed. The water curtain from just now may have been just a sheet of water, but the pressure in the instant it passed by was incomparably sharp. If his movements had been any slower, what might have been shaved off could have been his entire nose or even his head.
"Everyone, stop for me!" a female voice shouted loudly.
A winged pegasus flew close to the mages. Surprisingly, a circular curtain of water was constantly swirling around this winged pegasus, making it look as if it were wrapped in a giant, pale blue gem. Two people were sitting on the pegasus. The first was a delicate-looking girl in her teens. The other was a middle-aged female mage of about forty, wearing the unique mage robes of the Tower of Fangs, a pale blue like water.
"Tower Master Adelaide, what are you doing here?" The mages all recognized the female mage.
"Everyone, stop. I have something to say." The female mage on the pegasus shouted to her surroundings.
A sudden, piercing sound of wind rang out. The female mage's face turned cold. She turned to face Master Aiden, who was below and to the side. A thick wall of ice appeared out of thin air before the pegasus, followed by a dull cracking sound. The wall of ice shattered into a sky full of broken ice fragments.
After the ice fragments scattered, the blue water curtain around the pegasus also shuddered, a dent appearing, but it immediately recovered. The female mage looked coldly at the floating Master Aiden.
"Adelaide, you stinking bitch, what are you doing here? How dare you ambush me?" Master Aiden glared at the female mage on the pegasus and roared harshly. Electric light surrounded his entire body, but he made no attacking move. It wasn't that he could restrain his anger from acting, but because he knew it would be useless. No matter how powerful the lightning, striking a magical water curtain like this would have no effect. Even a Thunderblast Bomb would be absorbed and dispersed by the water curtain before it could explode, under the master-level water spell of the female mage. The wind blade spell from just now had been the most effective method, but it was clear that it had not been very effective either.
The attack power of water spells is the lowest among the elemental spells; they are merely varied in effect. However, once a mage's level reaches the master or grandmaster level, generally, no one is willing to provoke them. Especially for an air magic master like Master Aiden, no matter how profound his lightning and thunderballs were, he was like a mouse trying to drag a turtle, with nowhere to even start.
"You are no longer the Tower Master of the Tower of Fangs. You have no right to command people here. We are all here to take revenge on these elves and to retrieve the medicine to treat Tower Master Graden. Although I've always wanted to teach you, a stinking woman, a lesson, I don't have time for you today. Get lost and don't get in our way."
"Get in your way? No, I'm not here to get in your way. I'm here to get in your way." The female mage named Adelaide looked at Master Aiden and said. She had a face as beautiful as a peach blossom, with orange-red curly hair hanging down to her shoulders, yet her expression had always been as light and cold as water. Although her face already showed the weathering of age, her charm was not diminished in the slightest. Even as she looked at Master Aiden with such cold, murderous eyes, she still seemed to possess a kind of feminine charm, like a woman's light anger.
"Getting in my way is getting in all of our way. You're getting in the way of us saving Tower Master Graden. Everyone, listen up. Let's drive this stinking bitch away first."
"Everyone, listen. This man is actually the true culprit who framed Tower Master Graden. He is merely using all of you to come here and rob the elves of their Leaves of the World Tree." Adelaide's voice wasn't as loud as Master Aiden's, but its shock value was absolutely sufficient. Every mage who heard this sentence was stunned.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Master Aiden's entire face was trembling.
"Nonsense? I'm sorry to tell you this, but the mind magic on the brains of your so-called witnesses has already been dispelled by me. They can all now recall very clearly that it was your friend who told them Tower Master Graden was injured by an elf. He described it in great detail, vividly and concretely, and combined with the effect of the mind magic, they all believed it was something they had seen with their own eyes."
"Two years ago, you and Asri joined forces to use a scheme to drive me out of the Tower of Fangs, and even hunted me down along the way. You subsequently locked up or drove away everyone in the tower you disliked. Did you think that from then on, the Tower of Fangs could be your playground to do as you please? Although I went into hiding within the borders of Ainfast, I had long since left people inside the Tower of Fangs. They would notify me as soon as anything was amiss." Adelaide patted the young girl driving the pegasus beside her. "This time, I really have to thank Aimee and her brother. If they hadn't notified me and identified the mind magic on those few people, the Tower of Fangs might have truly been yours to do as you please." She pointed at the mess below and raised her voice to shout. "Everyone who died here died because of you."
The mages in the air looked at each other, at a loss. Although Adelaide had been missing for a period of time, she was, after all, the Tower Master of the Tower of Water. In terms of prestige and influence, she was at least higher than Master Aiden, who had always been uninvolved in affairs. Moreover, what she said could not be called unbelievable.
